Atlanta InDesign User Group

Meeting Notes Archive

Tuesday, October 1, 2002
On October 1, the Atlanta InDesign® user group held its second meeting, at the Atlanta Art Institute.

Jim Stringer showed us an “under-the-hood” look at his award-winning magazine design. Going page by page, he demonstrated how he used InDesign’s powerful graphics tools to “push the envelope” of page layout. Jim's fondness for the program is contagious, and his imagination is inspirational.

Ray Robertson of Scripting Matters demonstrated the amazing automation of InDesign, using AppleScript to import database information to populate multiple versions of Georgia county government statistics. Watching the pages seemingly build themselves, attendees were awed at the strength of scripting and Ray's mastery of it.

In the “Tips & Tricks” section of the evening, Claudia McCue showed that while a frame in InDesign may be created initially as a text frame or graphics frame, it can become any kind of frame easily, depending on the type of content that's placed in it. Attendees saw that a clipping path can be modified in InDesign without exiting to Photoshop®, and that a frame can be created from a clipping path and then re-purposed for another type of content.

Thanks to everyone who came out to devote their evening to the joys of InDesign

Best regards,
Claudia McCue
